UCSB Avenges Earlier Season Loss, Defeats Fullerton, 3-1

FULLERTON, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Lauren McLaughlin posted her 17th double-double of the season as she helped lead the UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team to a 30-24, 34-32, 26-30, 30-28 victory over Big West Conference opponent Cal State Fullerton on Friday evening in Titan Gymnasium.

The Gauchos, who dropped a home contest to the Titans in five games on Oct. 6, split this season's series with Fullerton. UCSB improves to 10-15 overall and 5-7 in conference while Fullerton is now 11-12 overall and 5-6 in Big West matches.

McLaughlin posted 22 kills and 16 digs, while also assisting five blocks during tonight's match. Defensively, junior libero Leigh Stephenson recorded a career-high 31 digs in the win, marking the second time this season she has posted 30 or more scoops. She also tallied the Gauchos' lone service ace of the evening.

Sophomore Rebecca Saraceno notched her 13th double-double of the year with 16 kills and 11 digs in the match. Senior Brett Quirarte posted 12 kills on 30 attempts with just one error for a .367 clip and also had two solo blocks and three block assists.

Freshman Kasey Kipp was impressive at the net tallying eight block assists, just one shy of tying her career-high, and also had one solo block. Kipp also notched 10 kills in the win. Senior Lauren Smith posted an impressive .583 hitting percentage with eight kills on 12 attempts with a single error, she also had a career-best four block assists.

Freshman Dana Vargas rounded out a night of impressive numbers with 49 assists and a career-high tying 16 digs for her eighth double-double this year.

Brittany Moore led the Titans with a match-high 24 kills along with 15 digs. Julie Geissert pitched in 34 assists with 11 digs while Genie Francisco had 40 assists and 18 digs. Libero Cami Croteau led all players with 34 digs in the match. Five Titans posted 10 kills or more in the loss.

The Gauchos displayed their best hitting in the first frame with a collective .326 clip versus Fullerton's .277. The game remained tight until UCSB was able to break free from a 10-10 tie with a 5-2 run. From that point on, the closest the Titans would come would be one point at 15-14 before the Gauchos sailed to the 30-24 victory, which was sealed with a kill by Saraceno.

The second game proved to be a much tougher battle as the two teams fought through 15 tied scores and eight lead changes. Trailing 20-16, Fullerton called a timeout and out of the break it was able to come back and tie the game at 25-25. The lead changed hands several times and with the game even at 28-28, UCSB reached game point on a Titan attack error. Fullerton evened the score four more times before the Gauchos broke free from a 32-32 tie on another error. A kill by McLaughlin captured the win at 34-32.

Game three was another tightly contested battle, but Fullerton broke a 23-23 tie with a 5-0 run to capture a 27-23 advantage. A kill by Sarah Day brought the Titans to game point and three plays later, Deven Bukoski landed a kill to capture the 30-26 win for Fullerton.

The final frame saw an impressive 19 ties and 10 lead changes with neither team leading by more than three points at any juncture. UCSB broke free from a 25-25 tie with three consecutive kills from McLaughlin to post the biggest lead of the game at 28-25. The Titans managed a 3-0 run of their own to once again deadlock the game at 28-28, but a kill from Smith brought the Gauchos within one point of the win and a Titan attack error ended the game at 30-28.

The Gauchos, will continue Big West action next week when they head to No. 23 Cal Poly on Thursday, Nov. 8 for a 7 p.m. match-up with the Mustangs.
