MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team posted a 30-27, 30-25, 30-20 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a non-conference match-up Tuesday evening in the Firestone Fieldhouse. With the loss, UCSB falls to 9-15 on the season while Pepperdine improves to 14-7 overall.
Senior Brett Quirarte led the Gauchos with 14 kills on the match and hit a solid .370 against the Waves. The middle blocker also tallied three block assists and one solo block. Sophomore Rebecca Saraceno was the only other Gaucho to post double-digit kills with 11.
Setter Dana Vargas tallied 24 assists and six digs in the loss while libero Leigh Stephenson had 18 digs. Kasey Kipp and Lauren Smith each posted five block assists, helping UCSB outblock the Waves 9-5 in the match.
Julie Rubenstein led Pepperdine with 19 kills and also collected 12 digs. Kayla Walker posted 11 kills with a .320 clip and three total blocks. Kiah Fiers handed out 43 assists and Krista Friedman tallied 20 digs.
The teams were tied nine times and there were five lead changes early in game one. The Waves broke free from a 17-17 tie with a 4-0 run that included two kills from Rubenstein. Two points would be as close as the Gauchos would get during the rest of the frame as a service ace from Fiers sealed the 30-27 win. The Waves outhit UCSB .233 to .091 in the first game.
UCSB captured the first point of game two with a kill from Smith, but it would be the last time the Gauchos would lead as Pepperdine responded with a 7-1 run to open the game. Pepperdine posted a .359 clip to UCSB's .244 hitting percentage on its way to a 30-25 victory.
The Waves hit a match-best .366 in the final frame as they fought through five ties and two lead changes on their way to the 30-20 win and the match victory.
The Gauchos, will return to Big West Conference action on Friday, Nov. 2 at Cal State Fullerton. The pairing is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in Titan Gymnasium.
