SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - For the first time in program history, the UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team was defeated by Big West Conference opponent UC Irvine on its home court as the Anteaters handed UCSB a heartbreaking 30-28, 33-31, 17-30, 24-30, 15-13 loss Friday evening in the Thunderdome snapping the Gauchos' five-match home win streak.
With the loss the Gauchos fell to 13-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play while the UC Irvine record was lifted to 7-14 and 2-4 in Big West action. UCSB's six-match win streak against the Anteaters was broken, but the Gauchos still lead the all-time series with Irvine, 60-5.
Senior outside hitter Jamie Garbisch recorded her tenth double-double of the season as she led UCSB with 21 kills and 11 digs in the loss. Sophomore Lauren McLaughlin also put up a set of double-digit numbers with 15 kills and 14 digs. Senior Olivia Waldowski, who leads the conference in hitting, posted a team-leading .412 clip on the evening with 17 kills on 34 attempts with three errors. The Irvine, Calif. native also recorded three blocks on the night (one solo and two assists) while freshman Rebecca Saraceno tallied a team-high six total blocks including a career-record three solo blocks.
UC Irvine's Lauren Kellerman led all players with 28 kills on the night accompanied by 13 assists. McCall Miller also had a double-double for Irvine with 19 kills and a team-high 18 digs. Five Anteaters posted four blocks apiece, but were still outblocked by the Gauchos 14 to 11. Taryn Robertson recorded 57 assists along with 10 digs to round out the Anteater leaders.
Game one saw only one tie at 2-2 after which the Anteaters posted a 4-0 run to gain some distance from the Gauchos. UCSB continued to play catch-up with UC Irvine, and came within two-points at 13-15 following a kill from Brett Quirarte. The Anteaters once again distanced themselves with an 8-5 run. The Gauchos continued to chip away as they tallied five unanswered points to trail 24-23. UCSB remained in striking range, but UC Irvine never relinquished the advantage and took the game at 30-28.
In the second game, the Gauchos saw improved hitting, as they outhit the Anteaters .151 to .140. UCSB unfortunately also faced an injury early in the second frame as the game was stopped when junior middle blocker Quirarte sprained her ankle, forcing her to sit out the remainder of the match.
Following the break in play, the score remained tight all the way down to game point as each team traded kills before the Gauchos committed an attack error which was followed by a kill from Kellerman that sealed the Irvine win at 33-31. The Anteaters were led by Miller who posted nine kills in the frame while Garbisch posted seven for the Gauchos.
UCSB came out of the locker rooms tough as it posted a 10-3 run early in the third frame. The Gauchos never looked back eventually capturing a 30-17 win fueled by three kills apiece from Garbisch and Saraceno and six total team blocks.
The Gaucho momentum carried over into the fourth frame as UCSB climbed to an early lead, but with the score at 23-16, the Anteaters fought back and posted four unanswered points, including three kills by Kellerman. Irvine's comeback fell short as they sealed the Gaucho win at 30-24 following three straight errors forcing the match into a fifth frame.
The fifth frame saw six ties before UCSB tallied three errors to give the Anteaters a 9-6 advantage. UCSB climbed back and following a kill by Waldowski and two straight from McLaughlin, was once again tied, this time at 12-12. Kellerman proved to be the hero for the Anteaters as she posted three kills to McLaughlin's one to capture the 15-13 game win and the overall 3-2 match victory for UC Irvine.
UCSB continues home action on Saturday night as they face longtime rival and Big West defending co-champion Long Beach State at home in the Thunderdome beginning at 7 p.m. The match will serve as College Sports Television's Match of the Week and will be televised by CSTV via tape-delay on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. PST.
