Gauchos Pick Up First Home Win of the Season With 3-0 Sweep of UC Davis

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team picked up its first home win of the season with a 30-27, 30-27, 30-28 victory over Big West Conference opponent UC Davis on Friday evening in the Thunderdome. Lauren McLaughlin led the Gauchos with 11 kills in the match.

UCSB improves to 8-14 overall and 3-7 in Big West matches. The Aggies are now 3-19 overall and 0-10 in the Big West. The win marked the second sweep of the season for the Gauchos; the first was also over the Aggies.

In addition to her 11 kills, McLaughlin also posted eight digs and an ace in the match. Brett Quirarte and Rebecca Saraceno each chipped in seven kills in the win with Saraceno also posting nine digs and six block assists.

Freshman setter Dana Vargas had 28 assists, seven digs and three kills while junior libero Leigh Stephenson collected a match-high 17 digs for UCSB.

For the Aggies, Renee Ibekwe led all players with 14 kills along with her team-leading 14 digs. Setter Carson Lowden dished out 38 assists in addition to six digs and four block assists. Erin Turner rounded out the double-digit kill performances with 10 in the loss.

UCSB got on the board first during game one on an Aggie attack error. The Gauchos climbed out to a 14-10 lead before UC Davis called a timeout. The timeout did the trick as UC Davis rallied back and scored the next four points to tie the game at 14-14 forcing the first Gaucho timeout of the game.

The Aggies took their first lead of the game at 16-15 with an ace from Ibekwe, but the Gauchos were able to regain the lead with a 3-0 run. The Aggies managed one more tie at 20-20, but UCSB reached game point first on an Aggie service error. UC Davis posted four consecutive points, including two aces from Katelyn Astruc before McLaughlin tallied a final kill to capture the 30-27 win for the Gauchos. McLaughlin led all players with seven kills in the frame.

Stephenson opened the second game with an ace and the Gauchos climbed to a 9-5 lead before UC Davis called a timeout. Out of the break, UCSB posted a 6-0 run behind the serving of McLaughlin to gain a 15-6 advantage. The Gauchos maintained the lead throughout the middle of the game before UC Davis climbed back within one point at 24-23. The Aggies continued to nip at UCSB's heels, but the Gauchos reached game point on a kill from Kasey Kipp. A UC Davis kill followed before the final point was earned on an Aggie error at 30-27.

UCSB once again picked up the initial lead in the third game behind a 7-3 run. The Aggies trailed the majority of the game before they were able to tie things up at 22-22 and after trading a pair of kills, UC Davis picked up its first lead of the game on an Ibekwe kill at 24-23. The Gauchos were able to reach game point first on a Quirarte kill and a service error by the Aggies two play later gave UCSB the 30-28 victory.

The Gauchos will continue this weekend's action at home on Saturday when they host Pacific at 7 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
