Long Beach State Defeats UCSB in Three

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team fell to Big West Conference foe Long Beach State, 30-14, 31-29, 30-17, Friday evening at the 49ers' Walter Pyramid. The 3-0 sweep marked the second loss of the season to the 49ers.

With the loss, UCSB falls to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in the Big West. Long Beach State extended its current win streak to seven straight matches and is now 13-5 on the season and 7-1 in conference matches.

UCSB was led by senior Brett Quirarte and junior Lauren McLaughlin, who each finished with nine kills, while freshman Stacey Schmidt added eight of her own. Freshman Kasey Kipp hit a team-best .308 with seven kills on 13 attempts with three errors. Overall, the Gauchos hit just .093 on the match (36-24-129) versus the 49ers' .250 clip.

Freshman setter Dana Vargas recorded 31 assists while junior libero Leigh Stephenson had a team-high 15 digs.

Long Beach State's Alexis Crimes led all players with 15 kills and a .419 clip, while also tallying nine digs. Michaela Hasalikova added eight kills and six blocks along with her .500 hitting percentage. Nicole Vargas had 37 assists in the match and three service aces, while Talaya Whitfield led all players with 19 digs.

Long Beach took control early in game one, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage, which prompted a Gaucho timeout. The lead grew to as many as 14 points at 20-6 before the 49ers captured the 30-14 victory. The 49ers hit .429 in the frame with Crimes leading the attack with seven kills.

The Gauchos came back fighting and forced several ties in the second frame with the last at 29-29. Long Beach held on, however, and a kill from Crimes followed by a Hasalikova block earned the 49ers the 31-29 win. The Gauchos outhit Long Beach .200 to .140 in the frame.

Tied with six points apiece in game three, Long Beach went on a 5-0 run to jump out to an early 11-6 lead. The 49ers were able to push the lead to 20-9 before closing out the game at 30-17.

UCSB continues Big West action on the road on Saturday when they head to Cal State Northridge's Matadome for a rematch with the Matadors. The match, as always, is slated for a 7 p.m. first serve.
