Gauchos Prevail Over UC Irvine in 3-2 Road Win

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team earned its first Big West Conference win of the season with a 3-2 victory over UC Irvine Saturday evening at the Anteaters' Crawford Court.

With the win the Gauchos' season record is lifted to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in Big West competition. UC Irvine drops to 4-11 on the year and now stands at 0-2 in conference play.

Freshman setter Stephanie Brandt had a standout night for the Gauchos as she posted her second double-double of the weekend with 61 assists and 11 digs, her first came in Friday's loss to Long Beach State. Brandt also added two kills, but more notably had a game as well as career-high four service aces in the win.

Senior Jamie Garbisch also had her second double-double of the weekend and eighth on the season with a game-leading 26 kills in addition to 10 digs. Senior Olivia Waldowski led the Gauchos with a .483 hitting percentage, tallying 16 kills on 29 attempts with only two errors.

Rebecca Saraceno and Brett Quirarte each set new career records for blocks during the match. Saraceno tallied a career-high six block assists and one block solo. Quirarte had a career-high six block assists in addition to 13 kills.

Lauren Kellerman led the Anteaters with 22 kills while Taryn Robertson put up 47 assists and Devon Sutherland led with 28 digs.

In game one the Gauchos took an early lead separating themselves from the Anteaters by as many as seven points on a couple of occasions, but with the score at 24-19, UC Irvine went on a 5-0 run capped off by a service ace by Kristin Kelley to tie things up at 24-24. The game was tied several more times and with the score at 30-30, the Anteaters capitalized on kill by Kelley followed by a Gaucho attack error to take the first frame at 32-30.

The Gauchos struck quick in the second game and controlled the lead for the entire frame. UCSB outhit the Anteaters .333 to .150 to take game two 30-27.

Game three was close and saw six tied scores and five lead changes. With the game drawing to an end, the Gauchos were ahead 24-23 before UC Irvine blocked a Gaucho attack tying the score at 24-24. The Anteaters then went on a 5-3 run before taking the game with a kill by Trisha White, 30-27.

The fourth frame was tight early on, but with the score tied at 12-12, Garbisch grabbed the lead for UCSB with a kill. The Gauchos held the lead for the rest of the game and Garbisch sealed the 30-22 win with another kill. UCSB outhit the Anteaters .283 to .000.

The deciding game saw the best single game hitting for the Gauchos this season as they tallied nine kills in 13 attempts with no errors to post a .692 hitting percentage. Garbisch led the way with four kills and a service ace as UCSB dominated UC Irvine in game five, capturing a 15-4 victory and the overall 3-2 match win.

The Gauchos will return home next weekend for a three-game home stand. The Gauchos will face Big West foe Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Oct. 6 and UC Riverside on the following Saturday. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
