Pacific Captures 3-0 Win Over UC Santa Barbara

STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team struggled Friday evening as it was swept by Pacific, 30-16, 30-25, 30-22 at the Tigers' Alex G. Spanos Center marking the Gauchos' third consecutive Big West Conference loss.

UCSB falls to 5-10 on the year and 0-3 in Big West matches while Pacific improves to 8-3 and 2-1 in conference play.

The Gauchos posted a season-low .026 hitting percentage, tallying just 30 kills on 116 attempts with 27 errors, versus the Tigers .315 clip. For the first time this season, not one UCSB player tallied double-digit kills. The Gauchos' consistent team leader throughout this season, junior outside hitter Lauren McLaughlin, posted a team-high eight kills with 10 digs.

Freshman setter Dana Vargas had 23 assists in the loss in addition to three kills and two block assists. Senior middle blocker Brett Quirarte had six kills, an ace and four block assists.

Johanna Hilbers led the Tigers with 16 total points; she posted nine kills, three aces, and six total blocks. Svenja Engelhardt had a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs in the match while Megan MimMack posted an impressive .615 clip (10 kills, 2 errors, 13 attempts). Shannon Krug led all players with 38 assists and Julie Magud had a match-high 20 digs.

Game one saw Pacific notch 15 kills and not a single error on 22 attempts for a .682 hitting percentage. UCSB, meanwhile, posted just 10 kills and committed 11 errors as Pacific breezed to a 30-16 win in game one. The Tigers momentum carried over into game two as Pacific committed just one error through the middle of the game to build a 23-13 lead. The Gauchos staged a late rally and closed to within four points at 28-24 but the Tigers closed the door with a 30-25 win.

Following the break, Pacific jumped out to a 10-3 lead early in the third game. However, following a timeout from UCSB head coach Kathy Gregory, the Gauchos responded with 13 of the next 19 points to tie the game at 16-16. After trading four points, Pacific regained the lead behind a kill and an ace from Hilbers to make it 20-18. Engelhardt pushed the Pacific lead to three with her 10th kill of the match and Pacific never looked back as the Tigers swept the match with a 30-22 win.

UCSB will continue Big West action tomorrow with a match at UC Davis. The Gauchos will take on the Aggies at 7 pm in UC Davis' Pavilion.
