Gauchos Dominate Aggies In Home Opener

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team displayed its best hitting of the season as they posted a 30-24, 30-17, 30-19 win over UC Davis in the Gauchos' first match of the 2006 season in the Thunderdome Wednesday night. As a team, UCSB posted a hitting percentage of .359 that helped the Gauchos extend their home win streak to 16 matches.

With the win, the Gaucho season record is lifted to 6-5 while the Aggies drop to 1-11 and extend their losing streak to eight matches.

Reigning Big West Player of the Week Jamie Garbisch once again led the Gauchos tallying 16 kills in addition to two service aces in the win. Garbisch currently averages a team-leading 4.08 kills per game. Freshman Rebecca Saraceno also had an excellent night as she put away six service aces, which is not only an early career-high, but also a mark that ties her fifth in Gaucho history for most individual kills in a single game. Saraceno also had 10 kills in the win.

Olivia Waldowski rounds out the list of Gauchos with double-digit kills having posted 12 kills for 18 attempts and only three errors to give her a game-high .500 hitting percentage. Waldowski also had four block assists while teammate Lauren McLaughlin had a game-leading five total blocks.

Freshman Stephanie Brandt once again led the team for assists with 41 on the match while senior libero Emily Hendrickson had 16 digs.

Three Aggies led UC Davis with seven kills apiece. Brit Erickson had seven kills and a team-high eight digs. Chantel Paschetta and Rachel Keener each had seven kills and two digs in the loss. Setter Katelyn Astruc had a team-leading 25 assists for UC Davis.

The Gauchos outhit the Aggies .359 to .130 between the three games with their best hitting coming in game one where they registered a .421 percentage. The Gauchos' 11 total service aces in the match ties as the eighth highest in school history since rally formatting was instituted in 2001.

UCSB will continue home action on Saturday, Sept. 23 as they host Central Coast rival No. 21 ranked Cal Poly (8-4). The match will serve as both teams' Big West conference opener. The Mustangs will be the fourth ranked team the Gauchos have faced this season, UCSB has posted a 1-2 record against teams in the CSTV/AVCA Top-25 Coaches Poll this season. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
