San Diego, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team picked up its second win of the day Friday with a 3-0 blanking of Ivy League member Brown at Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. The Gauchos defeated #11 Wisconsin 3-2 earlier in the day at the USD Invitational.
Scores of the match were 30-24, 30-16 and 30-18. The two straight wins put UCSB back over .500 with a 5-4 record while the Bears are now 1-4. It was the first time the two squads had ever met.
Three Gauchos, including Lauren McLaughlin, Brett Quirarte and Olivia Waldowski, posted match-highs with 13 kills. Jamie Garbisch, who had a career-high 31 kills in the win over Wisconsin, totaled 11 kills and 14 digs, a match co-high along with Emily Hendrickson. McLaughlin also notched a double-double as she had 13 digs.
UCSB dominated both offensively and defensively. The Gauchos hit .317 with 59 kills while the Bears had 23 kills and a .061 attack percentage. UCSB held a 58-40 edge in digs and had eight blocks, six attributed to Waldowski. From the service line, UCSB dropped in eight aces.
Brown's Rikki Baldwin had seven kills and Katie Lapinski had 13 digs. The Bears put down just four kills in the second game and six in game three.
Garbisch, an all-tournament pick last week at UNLV, leads the Gauchos with 3.88 kills per game this season. The senior outside hitter has amassed 10 or more kills in seven of 10 matches and has had four double-doubles on the season.
UCSB is 2-1 thus far at the USD Invitational as it fell 3-0 against host San Diego Thursday.
The Gauchos wrap up tourney action Saturday against #16 Ohio at 4 p.m. The contest will also bring to an end a 10-match road trip with UCSB opening its home season Sept. 20 against UC Davis at The Thunderdome (7 p.m.).
