MORAGA, Calif. - Junior Lauren McLaughlin posted her eighth double-double of the season with 23 kills and a season-high 20 digs to lead the UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team to a 26-30, 26-30, 30-28, 30-27, 15-12 win over Saint Mary's Thursday evening at the Gael's McKeon Pavilion. The win snapped the Gauchos six match losing skid and improved their record to 3-7 on the season while Saint Mary's fell to 5-4.
In addition to her team-leading kills and digs, McLaughlin posted a team-best three solo blocks in addition to three block assists in the match. Senior middle blocker Brett Quirarte notched a season-high 21 kills on 36 attempts with just three errors for a .500 clip. Quirarte also had four block assists and one solo block in the match.
Rebecca Saraceno rounded out the double-digit kill performances with 16 kills and also tallied seven digs and three block assists. Freshman setter Dana Vargas posted 56 assists in the match and also had eight digs and two blocks. Junior libero Leigh Stephenson collected 14 scoops and two aces while freshman Caitlin Saxton had 10 digs and an ace. Freshman Kasey Kipp chipped in five block assists in the win.
For the Gaels, Megan York led all players with 26 kills and also posted 17 digs. Taylor Groess had 20 kills and Megan Burton had 13 kills with seven assisted blocks. Alita Fisher had a match-high 25 digs while Kapua Kamana'o led all players with 76 assists.
In the match, UCSB narrowly outhit the Gaels .251 to .250 and outblocked them 13 to 9.5. Saint Mary's led in kills, assists, aces and digs.
The Gaels took the first two games by way of 30-26 scores before UCSB was able to turn things around in game three and outhit its opponent .326 to .295 to take the frame 30-28. Game four saw a match-high 19 tied scores and 10 lead changes before UCSB took the game, 30-27 behind a .311 team clip.
Trailing 12-10 in the final game, UCSB staged a 5-0 run that included three Gael attack errors, to capture the 15-12 victory.
UCSB will continue action in the Bay Area on Friday when they open the Santa Clara Invitational with a match versus Notre Dame at 4:30 pm at Santa Clara's Leavey Center.
