SAN DIEGO - Kathy Gregory has been saying early this season that this year's UCSB women's volleyball team is much improved than the previous two seasons - the only two losing seasons in Gaucho history.
Thus far, her team is proving her predictions right.
It was UCSB's first victory over a ranked school since defeating Santa Clara, ranked No. 22, on Sept. 15, 2007.
Saraceno had 24 kills, one off her career-high, and hit at an amazing .676 clip, making just one error in 34 swings. Schmidt, meanwhile, wouldn't be overshadowed, compiling a .714 hitting percentage, notching 10 kills in 14 attempts.
As a team the Gauchos hit .495, which is a school record in the rally-scoring format, and just 50 points shy of the UCSB overall record. Setter Dana Vargas made it happen with 42 assists.
Freshman Leah Sully continued to make her presence felt, compiling 11 kills. UCSB also tallied eight service aces as Chelsey Lowe had three and Vargas had two. Lowe also had a team-best 13 digs. Vargas and Lily Lopez each had four block assists.
The Gauchos will battle No. 15 San Diego again Saturday afternoon in San Diego at 2 p.m. The game is available online through Gametracker. UCSB officially opens its home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they face Santa Clara at The Thunderdome.
