LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara volleyball team dropped its second consecutive match at the LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic in a 28-30, 22-30, 30-32 loss to host Loyola Marymount Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion. Junior outside hitter Lauren McLaughlin led the Gauchos for the fifth straight match, posting 18 kills in the match.
With the loss, UCSB falls to 2-3 on the early season while LMU now stands at 3-2. UCSB continues to lead the all-time series with the Lions, 26-7.
McLaughlin had a team-leading 18 kills and hit .283 on the match. She fell just one dig short of her fifth consecutive double-double with nine scoops in the match. The Torrance, Calif. native also tallied an ace and two solo blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Saraceno posted 11 kills and 10 digs in the match.
LMU's Heather Hughes led all players with 23 kills in the match. Hughes posted a .380 hitting percentage and tallied 11 digs with four block assists. Whitney Leonard led all players with 20 digs and setter Renee Horton had 52 assists.
The two teams were tied 10 times during game one with the Gauchos twice holding a four-point lead. Towards the end of the game, with the score tied up at 24-24, the Lions were able to make a three-point run, forcing the Gauchos into a timeout. Unfortunately, UCSB was unable to come back and a pair of kills from Hughes sealed the game at 30-28.
LMU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two and never looked back. The Lions posted an impressive .528 clip in the frame and took the game with a 30-22 score.
The third frame saw 11 tied scores as both teams remained neck-in-neck throughout most the match. With the Gauchos trailing by one, a kill by Saraceno tied the score for the last time at 30-30. A kill from Hughes followed by a kill by Christianna Reneau ended the match with the Lions taking game three, 32-30.
UCSB will round out tournament action tonight when they face first-time opponent Northwestern at 5 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion.
