SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team dropped its home opener on Monday night, falling to Cincinnati 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 in a match-up of two teams receiving votes in the AVCA poll.
The Gauchos and Bearcats came into historic Rob Gym on UCSB's campus receiving the same amount of votes, but that should likely change after Cincinnati defeated the Gauchos in nearly every facet of the match.
The home defeat equaled the Gauchos' entire total from the 2009 season.
Cincinnati (3-1 overall) hit .344 as a team, totaled eight blocks and had seven service errors. On the other side of the net the Gauchos hit .168, totaled just one team block and committed seven receiving errors and five more serving errors.
Stacey Schmidt led the Gauchos with 10 kills and a .562 hitting percentage while Lily Lopez had seven kills and Charlene DeHoog chipped in five. Setter Dana Vargas passed out 31 assists to go with eight digs while Kara Sherrard led the way with nine digs.
UCSB was coming off a Saturday sweep of Manhattan, but barely led at any time during Monday's match.
The Gauchos will play in the USF Powerade/Asics Challenge this weekend and will face San Francisco on Friday night and then Washington State and Tulsa on Saturday.
UCSB does not return home until Oct. 1 when it hosts Long Beach State. The latest Legend of the 'Dome will be unveiled at that match.
