Gauchos Unable To Overcome No. 4 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team fell to No. 4 Stanford on the road Saturday evening, 30-20, 30-26, 30-25. Senior Jamie Garbisch posted a team-high 13 kills and .265 hitting percentage in addition to a game-high two service aces in the Gauchos' first loss of the season.

UCSB falls to 1-1 on the young season, while nationally-ranked No. 4 Stanford starts the season with a 1-0 record.

Besides Garbisch, the only other Gaucho to post double-digit kills was freshman outside hitter Rebecca Saraceno who tallied 10 kills for the second time this weekend while also posting four blocks. Another freshman leader for UCSB was Stephanie Brandt who posted 34 assists on the day while senior Olivia Waldowski led with five blocks and rounding out the Gaucho stat leaders was senior Emily Hendrickson who led the team in digs posting 17 total.

UCSB took an early lead in game one with a kill by Saraceno followed by a service ace by Garbisch, but the Cardinal quickly gained momentum and posted six unanswered points including three kills by sophomore Cynthia Barboza. Following another three unanswered kills, the Gauchos took a timeout while trailing 10-5. Stanford continued to move ahead but UCSB managed a three-point run, capitalizing on a kill by Lauren McLaughlin and two Stanford attack errors to bring the score to 12-8. The Cardinal collected a series of three-point runs before finally capturing the game on a UCSB service error, 30-20.

Game two saw the Gauchos jump ahead, 11-7 following a five-point run featuring three kills by Garbisch. Stanford rallied back to a 14-12 lead following a timeout with a kill by Foluke Akinradewo. The Gauchos tied the game at 14 with a service ace from Garbisch, but an attack error helped the Cardinal regain the led. UCSB tied things up again at 18 off of a Stanford hitting error, but Richards reclaimed the Cardinal advantage with back-to-back kills. Richards continued her streak with a service ace to bring the Stanford lead to 22-18. The Gauchos rallied back and tied the game at 22 with a kill by Brett Quirarte. Stanford's Erin Waller answered with a block to put the Cardinal ahead once again with this lead being the final as Stanford finished with a 30-26 win.

Stanford captured an early 4-1 advantage in game three with kills provided by Richards and Franci Girard, but the Gauchos' were able to play catch-up and tied the game at 7 following a Cardinal attack error. Santa Barbara then captured their first lead of the game with yet another kill by Garbicsh. Stanford once again pulled away, but UCSB served up a five-point run, including two kills and a service ace by Brandt to gain a 15-10 lead. The Gauchos held the lead until Niji Nnamani put down a service ace that tied things up at 21. The Cardinal went on a 9-4 run featuring Richards' game winning tip over the net to end the game at 30-25 in favor of Stanford.

Stanford was led by three players that tallied double digit kills, including Richards (14), Akinradewo (13) and Barboza (10). Sophomore Jessica Fishburn led the squad with 14 digs, while Richards added 11 digs. Kehoe ended the night with 30 assists, including 11 in the final game. Akinradewo led the squad with six blocks, followed by Kehoe with four.

The Gauchos will continue their road swing Sept. 2--3 when they head to San Francisco, Calif. for the USF Coca Cola/Asics Classic where they will face San Jose State first on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
