UCSB Opens Season With Sweep Of Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara got the 2006 season off to a good start on Friday as the visiting Gauchos swept Fresno State, 30-20, 30-22, 30-24 in a non-conference match at the Bulldogs' North Gym. Senior Olivia Waldowski led the Gauchos hitting .565 on the afternoon with 13 kills and no errors.

The Gauchos begin the season with a 1-0 record while Fresno now stands at 0-1.

Waldowski was the team kill leader with 13, but three other Gauchos chipped-in double digit kills with senior Jamie Garbisch posting 12 kills and 11 digs. Lauren McLaughlin contributed 11 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Rebecca Saraceno made her collegiate debut with 10 kills for 22 attempts for a percentage of .318.

Senior Emily Hendrickson led the Gauchos with 29 digs while freshman Stephanie Brandt also had a great debut with a team-leading 41 assists against the Bulldogs.

Fresno State was led by Lacey Gera who posted 12 kills and Alisha McKee added 11 in the Bulldog loss. Libero Cheryl Selnak had a team-high 16 digs in the match.

The first game began with the teams trading several points until the Gauchos broke through and were able to gain a 12-7 advantage, their biggest lead early in the match, following three consecutive kills by Garbisch. Santa Barbara did not look back and out-hit the Bulldogs .442 to .182, taking away the 30-20 win.

Game two started out in much the same fashion with neither team taking a lead greater than two points, until McLaughlin and Waldowski added back-to-back kills to bring UCSB's lead to 13-9. From that point forward, the Gauchos held the lead and captured the 30-22 win.

In the third game, the Bulldogs saw their first significant lead of the day as they captured a 7-4 advantage early. Santa Barbara slowly closed the gap and captured a 13-12 edge on a Fresno attack error. The Gauchos once again held onto their hard-earned advantage and closed out the final game at 30-24.

The Gauchos will continue their opening weekend with a match at No. 4 Stanford on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. Santa Barbara's visit will serve as the Cardinal season opener.
