UCSB Closes Out Regular Season with Hawai’i, Cal Poly
Last weekend, UCSB took Hawai’i to five sets in the Thunderdome, as it nearly pulled off a comeback after being down 2-0. The two opening sets went to the Rainbow Wahine, but the Gauchos kept the score close with both ending in 25-23 decisions. After the break, Hawai’i seemed to be on its way to a road sweep, but UCSB made its midway through the third set on a 9-2 run that garnered the team then their largest lead of the game at 22-19. While Hawai’i forced extra points, UCSB thwarted two Rainbow Wahine match-points and took the set to stay alive. The fourth set was taken convincingly by the Gauchos at 25-19, but the fifth set would end in a narrow 15-12 finish in favor of Hawai’i. It was the third time in the past four matches that the Gaucchos and the Rainbow Wahine competed to five-set decisions.

UCSB Closes Out Regular Season with Hawai’i, Cal Poly
UCSB saw its three-match winning streak end this weekend with back-to-back 3-0 losses to Cal State Northridge and No. 20 Long Beach State. The Gauchos could not pick up the season sweep of the Matadors, as they previously dominated CSUN in the teams’ previous matchup in the Thunderdome on Oct. 18. The first set had a tight 26-24 finish, but the Matadors would complete the match in straight sets thanks to its .319 hitting percentage. The 49ers protected their undefeated conference record (12-0) and are now 22-4 overall.

UCSB Faces Challenging Road Swing at CSUN, Long Beach State
The Gauchos went a perfect 2-0 last weekend with a pair of four set victories over Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. UCSB completed its season sweep of the Titans with the win, while it evened the score with the Anteaters who won the previous match-up 3-2 in Irvine. Ali Barbeau continued to be the team’s primary offensive threat, as she finished with 24 combined kills. Defensively, Kristen Berlo had a breakout weekend in setting her career-high in block assists in back-to-back matches.

UCSB Defense, Service Game Carries Team to 3-1 Win Over Cal State Fullerton
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Gauchos started the weekend off strong with a 3-1 win against CSU Fullerton, bringing their overall record to an even 11-11 and their conference record to 6-5. With the loss, Cal State Fullerton slides to 7-16 and 1-9 in Big West play.

UCSB Returns Home to Face Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine
Last weekend, the Gauchos split their road trip with a 3-2 loss at UC Davis followed by an impressive 3-0 sweep over UC Riverside. Against the Aggies, the Gauchos dealt the first blow in winning the first set 25-19, but later had to win the fourth game to stave elimination. Ultimately, the team fell 15-10 in the decisive fifth set. UCSB bounced back in a big way, though, at Riverside where they convincingly downed the Highlanders with final scores of 25-13, 25-22, and 25-19. With that win, the Gauchos swept their season series with UC Riverside with a pair of sweeps for the second consecutive year.

Gauchos Continue on the Road at Davis, Riverside
Last weekend, UCSB traveled to Hawai’i where they were dealt a 3-1 loss after battling closely with the Rainbow Wahine in the first two sets. Ali Barbeau led the Gaucho offense with 16 kills, while Chanel Hoffman had 11 kills and 16 digs, which was her team-high fifth double-double of the season. In the match, the Gauchos held their own defensively, as they limited the Rainbow Wahine to a .216 hitting percentage, which was their lowest mark at home this season since Oregon limited them to a .178 clip on Sept. 5.

UCSB Visits Hawai'i for Marquee Conference Match-Up
Last weekend, UCSB had a big sweep over Cal State Northridge after falling 3-0 to Long Beach State the night before. The teams battled into extra points in the first and third sets with UCSB pulling off a come-from-behind 28-26 victory in the third. The Gauchos’ win over CSUN was its seventh straight sweep of the Matadors in the Thunderdome. Northridge was receiving votes in the AVCA Poll and was ranked No.16 in the RPI - best of all the Big West teams - heading into last weekend’s play.

Last weekend, UCSB split its first road trip of the Big West season with a 3-2 loss at UC Irvine and a 3-1 victory at Cal State Fullerton. The Gauchos made a comeback in the fourth set against the Anteaters to force a fifth set, but Irvine successfully defended their home floor with a 15-8 fifth set score. UCSB bounced back against Cal State Fullerton, as the team put together its best blocking performance of the year with 32 total blocks.

UCSB Make First Road Visits of Big West Season at Irvine, Fullerton
Last weekend, UCSB closed out a five-match home stand with a sweep of UC Riverside and a 3-0 loss to UC Davis. The Gauchos checked in with perhaps their most dominant match of the year so far by limiting the Highlanders to just a .040 hitting percentage, while also registering a team .303 hitting percentage. During Saturday’s match against UC Davis, UCSB held the Aggies to just a .188 kill percentage, but could not capitalize on the offensive side, as they finished with a season-low 23 kills.

UCSB Opens Season at Rams Volleyball Classic
While UCSB has not faced Marquette or Virginia Commonwealth, it did play Colorado State in last year’s Pepperdine Invitational in the second week of the season. The Gauchos fell to the Rams 3-1 that weekend. Colorado State returns three of the four players who reached double kills figures against the Gauchos last year, while UCSB will have Barbeau and Spindt who recorded 12 and 11 kills in that match, respectively.

UCSB Selected Third in Big West Preseason Poll
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Coming off a Big West Championship season, UCSB was selected third in the conference's 2014 preseason poll, as it collected the second-most first place votes. Hawai’i was voted as the preseason favorite with 77 total points and five first place votes, while Long Beach State was second with 68 points and one vote for first. The Gauchos received 63 total points and a pair of first place votes.
