• All-Tournament, All The Time
Following UC Santa Barbara's season-opening tournament in Provo, Utah, senior Stacey Schmidt was named to the All-Tournament Team. The middle blocker recorded 46 total kills – including 20 vs. No. 8 Illinois – and set a career-high with 11 block assists vs. St. Mary's. Schmidt hit .356 for the weekend which is outstanding considering the team – including Schmidt's percentage – batted .086 for the weekend. Schmidt has now been a part of five consecutive All-Tournament Teams, dating back to last season when she was honored in all four tournaments the Gauchos were a part of.

• Two For the Road
UCSB's legendary coach, Kathy Gregory, is just two wins away from her 850th career victory. "The Queen" has amassed the sixth-most victories of any Division I coach of all-time and when she captures her 850th, she will be one of just six coaches to achieve the feat. Gregory ranks 10th in all-time victories across all divisions, according to the NCAA.

• Double Dipper
In her first three matches of the season – this coming after she missed all of last year due to a torn ACL – Leah Sully has recorded three double-doubles. She had season-highs of 16 kills and 18 digs vs. St. Mary's, followed by 12 and 14 against BYU and finished off the weekend with 12 and 15 vs. No. 8 Illinois.

• What a CLASS-y Lady
Stacey Schmidt was recently honored as one of 30 nominees nationwide for the Lowe's Senior CLASS award, marking the second straight year a Gaucho has been an honoree for the prestigious award. The CLASS award stands for senior's who achieve great things in their community, the classroom, in their field of play and who show great character. Last season Dana Vargas was one of the original 30 nominees.

• Gauchos Tabbed Third in Preseason Poll
In the annual Big West coaches preseason poll, UC Santa Barbara was picked to finish third in the conference. Chosen ahead of the Gauchos were Long Beach State and Cal Poly.

• Rank and File
This season, UCSB will face eight different teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in the preseason AVCA poll. After going 1-1 vs. St. Mary's (receiving votes) and No. 8 Illinois, the string continues as Santa Barbara will face Miami and Pepperdine to open this weekend's tournament as both are receiving votes. Last season the Gauchos were 1-3 against ranked teams.

• The D is Key
In UCSB's opener vs. St. Mary's the Gauchos rallied from a 2-0 hole to win in five mainly because of their stellar defense. UCSB had 93 digs and 14.0 total team blocks – both of which surpassed the highs the 2010 team established. UCSB is holding its opponents to a .197 hitting percentage.

• Welcome to The Show
Freshman setter Hanna Nielson showed she had no butterflies in her stomach as she had a terrific collegiate debut. The Saratoga, Calif. native recorded 45 assists and 16 digs, along with five kills and four block assists, in the Gauchos' season-opening win over St. Mary's.
