UCSB's Stephanie Rothstein (Sr.) won her first international meeting for the United States at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Under 23 Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. On a hot and rainy Friday evening, a week in which Rothstein amongst other U.S. athletes lost their baggage, she was able to put everything aside and win the 10,000m final by forty-five seconds.
Her time of 37:57.94 over Canada's Shannon Elmer at Felix Sanchez Stadium was almost three and half minutes slower than her best, however tropical heat and a torrential downpour greeted the 10k harriers slowing down the race. Setting out a pedestrian pace of 1:40 per lap the skies opened up on lap three, and as Rothstein described it, "i mean a hurricane like terrential downpour. I could not see anything and we were running in a water a foot deep on the track". She remained in third place approximately twenty meters behind the leaders at the pace for seven laps.
At two miles the pace dropped ten seconds per lap, coming through 5,000m in 19:30. At this point Rothstein picked things up another fifteen to twenty seconds per lap, running 5:40 pace per mile over laps 13-16. Dropping the field with that effort she ran solo for the final three miles, slowing down to 5:50-6:00 minute pace per mile, crossing the finish line victorious. Although the rain did not stop until the twenty-third lap, it stopped in time for Rothstein to receive her medal on the awards podium and listen to the United States National Anthem as a champion for the first time in her career.
This was Rothstein's fourth 10,000m of 2006, a season in which she broke the Big West Conference and UCSB school records in the event with her time of 33:27.85. She also won the Big West Conference Championship at 10,000m and 5,000m while ending her NCAA campaign with an All-American 8th place finish at the Division I National Championships in early June. The to be senior is currently ranked 14th in the United States at the 10,000m distance and will now prepare for her fourth and final Gaucho Cross Country season which begins in early September.
