Gaucho Men in First after Day 1, Women in Second at Big West Track and Field Championships

Five Gauchos took individual Big West Championships Friday as UC Santa Barbara garnered eleven All-Big West plaques on day one of the Big West Championships. The men took the lead on day one of the Big West Championships with a score of 70.5 while the women sit in second behind defending champs and hosts Northridge 75-65.

1-2 finishes in both the hammer and steeplechase to start the meet sparked the men as Senior Eugene Bradley took the win in the hammer followed by Junior Reif Lawson. The steeplechase Senior Mike Chavez got the win after being runner-up last year and junior Mike Powers was second. The Gaucho men also took two third place finishes from senior J.D. Krawczyk in the 10,000 meters and junior Jacob Maus in the high jump.

Not to be outdone the UC Santa Barbara women had two 1-2 finishes of their own as junior Bethany Nickless and senior Christie Farson took first and second in the steeplechase and seniors Megan Lewis and Stephanie Rothstein duplicated that performance in the 10,000 meters. In the hammer senior Amy Haapanen continued her season long dominance with a win and conference meet record.

The Gauchos continue action today as 14 athletes qualified from prelims to finals and another 14 events are finals only on the second day of competition.
