Barbara Nwaba Named Golden 1 Credit Union/ Athlete of the Week

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Barbara Nwaba has been named the Golden 1 Credit Union/ Gaucho of the Week after winning the Big West heptathlon title at the multi-event portion of the Big West Conference Championships.

Nwaba scored 5552 points, finishing 40 points ahead of second-place finisher Desirae Gonder of Cal State Northridge. Nwaba broke her own UCSB record by more than 300 points, and has improved more than 500 points upon her personal best from the 2009 season.

The Los Angeles, Calif. native notched a personal best in the high jump along the way, with a clearance over 5'9.75" (1.76m) garnering her 928 points. That mark moves her into sole possession of fourth on the UCSB all-time high jump list. She also scored over 900 points in the 100m hurdles, with her time of 14.39 garnering 924 points.

Nwaba has the Gauchos leading the women's team scoring after the multi-event (decathlon and heptathlon) portion of the Big West Championships. UCSB has 17 points, ahead of 14 from Cal State Northridge and five from UC Davis. Cal State Northridge leads the men's team scoring with 16 points, ahead of nine from Cal Poly, eight from Long Beach State, and six from the Gauchos.

The Big West Conference Championship Meet will take place this Friday and Saturday, May 14-15, at Cal State Northridge.
