Nwaba's Record-Setting Day Earns Her UCSBGauchos.com Athlete of the Week Honors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore Barbara Nwaba, who broke a pair of UC Santa Barbara women's track and field records in Saturday's dual meet against Cal Poly, has been named UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week.

Nwaba, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., won the 100-meter hurdles by three hundredths of a second in a time of 14.21. Her time bettered the previous record of 14.49 set by Lisa Knott in 1996.

Later in the meet, Nwaba became the top all-around hurdler in Gaucho history by setting a school record in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 60.93 bettered the previous record of 61.79 set by Lindsay Wells in 2001. Nwaba is only a tenth of a second away form the Regional qualifying standard in the 400-meter hurdles.

In addition to records in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles, the biology major holds the UCSB record in the heptathlon at 5,039 points.
