Last Time
The Gauchos were spread out across three meets last week, with the first decathlon/heptathlon meets of the year, the Mt. SAC relays for the distance runners, and the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific. The biggest highlight of the week came at Mt. SAC, where Danielle Domenichelli broke the UCSB record and the Big West Conference record in the 5000m by running 16:01.20. Scott Smith also broke a UCSB record at Mt. SAC by running 13:56.72 in the 5000m, becoming the first Gaucho to break the 14-minute barrier in the 5k. Irene Kujore broke the UCSB discus record at Azusa Pacific with her throw of 171'6" (52.27m), ending Amy Haapanen's stranglehold on the UCSB throwing event records. Finally, Barbara Nwaba improved her school record in the heptathlon at the California Invitational Combined Events, scoring 5212 to place seventh in Section One.

This Week's Meet
The UC San Diego Triton Invitational will take place this weekend in La Jolla, Calif. UCSD will host the meet Friday and Saturday, April 23-24, at Triton Track and Field Stadium. Over 75 schools will field more than 1300 entries, including world leaders in the shot and discus and the 2004 gold medalist in the 400m. Friday's competition will feature only field events: the hammer, discus and pole vault to be specific. That day's activities will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the women's hammer. Saturday's competition will feature the rest of the events, with field events beginning at 10:00 a..m. and track events beginning at 11:00 a.m. Full meet information can be found at ucsdtritons.com.

Get the Door, It's Domenichelli
Danielle Domenichelli broke the UCSB women's 5000m record at the Mt. SAC Relays, running in the invitational/open section. She finished with a time of 16:01.20, which broke the UCSB record of 16:12.77 set by Stephanie Rothstein in 2007. Domenichelli also became the new Big West Conference record-holder, as Rothstein's time was the previous Big West record. Domenichelli's previous personal best was 16:27.98 from two seasons ago, and she is currently ranked sixth in the West region for the 5000m.

Great Scott
Before last weekend's Mt. SAC Relays, no Gaucho had ever run the 5000m in under 14 minutes. That changed after Scott Smith ran 13:56.72 in the university/open section to break his second UCSB record. He bettered the previous UCSB record of 14:00.00 set by Dave Cullum in 1997. Smith's previous personal best was 14:03.28 from last season, and he is currently ranked 32nd in the West region in the 5000m. He also leads the West in the 10,000m with his UCSB-record time of 28:35.71.

The Irene Scene
In 2007 Amy Haapanen set UCSB records in the shot put, hammer, and discus en route to an All-American finish in the hammer at the NCAA Championships. One of Haapanen's records fell last weekend when Irene Kujore threw 171'6" (52.27m) in the discus to take second at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Haapanen's old discus record was 170'11", and Kujore's previous personal best was 158'11" from last season.

On The Horizon
The Gauchos will travel to San Luis Obispo for their annual dual meet against Cal Poly next Saturday, May 1. Some members of the team will travel to Stanford instead for the Payton Jordan Invitational, which is also on Saturday May 1. More information on these meets will be available next week.
