Last Time
The Gauchos traveled to San Luis Obispo last weekend to participate in the Cal Poly Invitational. Highlights from that meet included Tayler Williams breaking the UCSB record in the triple jump with a best mark of 39'10.25" (12.15m), and also posting a six-meter mark in the long jump at 19'8.50" (6.01m). She won both of those events. Tamara Thomas also had a good showing in the triple jump with her mark of 39'8.75" (12.13m), which placed second.

This Week's Meet
The annual Big West Challenge Cup will take place this weekend in Irvine, Calif. UC Irvine will host the meet Friday evening, April 9, at Anteater Stadium. Field events will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the hammer throws, and the first track event will gun off at 6:00 p.m. The meet is scheduled to last until about 9:00 p.m. and will feature teams from UCSB, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.

2009 Challenge Cup Recap
The winner of the men's Challenge Cup in 2009 was Long Beach State with 209 points, followed by the Gauchos with 178, UC Irvine with 167 and Cal State Fullerton with 121. The winner of the women's Challenge Cup in 2009 was UC Irvine with 194.5 points, followed by Cal State Fullerton with 167.5, Long Beach State with 157 and the Gauchos with 152. Some noteworthy Gaucho performances from the meet included Ryan Martin winning the 800m in 1:49.79 and Irene Kujore winning the discus at 158-11 (48.43m).

Another Record Falls
Tayler Williams became the second Gaucho to set a UCSB record this season with her performance in the triple jump at the Cal Poly Invitational. Williams jumped 39'10.25" (12.15m) to eclipse the previous record of 39'8.75" set by Chelsea Haverty in 2005. Williams is currently tied for 28th in the West with her triple jump mark, and is also ranked 20th in the long jump with a mark of 19-8.75 (6.01m). She achieved that mark at last weekend's Cal Poly Invitational.

On the Horizon
The Gauchos will be busy next week with the first decathlon/heptathlon competitions of the year in the middle of the week, along with two large invitationals during the weekend. The California Invitational Multi-Events (decathlon and heptathlon) will be hosted by Azusa Pacific University on Wednesday and Thursday, April 14 and 15. Azusa will also host the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday, April 16 at Cougar Stadium. On Thursday - Saturday, Mt. SAC will play host to the Mt. SAC Relays, which is one of the largest track meets in the world. That meet will be held April 15-17 at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. Information regarding Gaucho participation in these meets will be posted in next week's release.
