The first Athlete of the Week accolade for the Women's Track & Field Team, Stephanie Rothstein shattered the Big West and UCSB 10,000m records with her performance at the Stanford Invitational.
Clocking in at 33:27.85, she finished 10th in an absolutely stacked Women's NCAA field. One of the deepest collegiate 10k's on record, her mark would have stood at 6th on the 2005 NCAA 10k performance list and 5th in 2004. Rothstein's time should remain within the top fifteen by year's end and is currently listed 9th on the NCAA performance list. The eight ahead of her all ran their mark in the same race on Friday night.
Along with the records she broke, her time also qualified Rothstein automatically (33:55) for the NCAA National Championships and the USA Track & Field National Championships with the "A" standard (33:50). In 2004 & 2005 her mark would have stood within the top twenty American (collegiate/professional) times.
Rothstein also earned Santa Barbara Newspress Athlete of the Week honors for her peformance. Next up for the Gaucho distance athlete will be the Big West Challenge Cup on Friday night at UC Irvine. She is scheduled to run the 3,000m.
