The Gauchos traveled to two meets last weekend--the Stanford Invitational at Stanford and Cal/Nevada at UCLA. The biggest highlight came at Stanford, where Scott Smith broke the UCSB record in the men's 10,000m with his time of 28:35.71. Smith was the first Gaucho to ever break the 29-minute barrier. Danielle Domenichelli nearly broke the UCSB record in the women's 10,000m but fell about six seconds short. She ran 33:29.65, which places her second on the all-time list. Cal/Nevada was highlighted by Jane Doolittle clearing 6'0" in the high jump for the first time in her career, winning the meet in the process.
This weekend on Saturday April 3, 2010, the Gauchos will make a short trip north to compete at the Cal Poly Invitational. Field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the first track event set to gun-off at 12:15 p.m. The meet is scheduled to run until approximately 4:00 p.m.
Scott Smith broke the UCSB record in the 10,000m this past weekend at the Stanford Invitational. His time of 28:35.71 eclipsed that of Josh Horton, who ran 29:09.85 in 2001. Smith is the first Gaucho to set a record in the men's running events since Mike Chavez (1500m, 3:43.80) and Tetlo Emmen (800m, 1:47.60) set two records in 2007.
Two Gauchos Honored by Big West
The Big West Conference named two Gauchos to the Athlete of the Week honor roll after their performances this past weekend. Danielle Domenichelli shared the women's track athlete of the week award with UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez. Domenichelli ran 33:29.65 in the 10,000m at the Stanford Invitational, moving her up to second on the UCSB all-time list. Jane Doolittle won the women's field athlete of the week award after she took the high jump title at Cal/Nevada. Doolittle cleared six feet (1.83m) for the first time in her career, and is now only half an inch below the UCSB high jump record of 6'0.50" set by Tara Fairfield in 1990.
Take Me To Your Leaders
The Gauchos currently have three athletes who are ranked in the top-5 in their respective events. Scott Smith is the West leader in the 10,000m after his 28:35.71 performance at Stanford. He is also fourth in the 1500m with his time of 3:46.09, set at the USC Invitational. Jane Doolittle is second in the west in the high jump at 6-0 (1.83m), with the leader at 6-3. Danielle Domenichelli is fourth in the 10,000m with her time of 33:29.65 from Stanford.
