Great Scott
The first two Regional-qualifying performances of the season were earned by two athletes who share a name, but compete in remarkably different events. Scott Smith recorded the third-best 5000m mark in UCSB history, finishing at14:03.26 at the Stanford Invitational. Scott Finley recorded the third-best pole vault clearance in UCSB history with his vault of 16-6.75 (5.05m) at the Cal/Nevada Championships. Both athletes have now punched a ticket to the NCAA West Regionals in Eugene, Ore.

The Irene Scene
Freshman Irene Kujore opened the season strongly at the Gaucho Round-Up and has started to improve as the season progresses. At last weekend's Cal/Nevada championships she threw 148-4 (45.21m) in the discus, which is good for eighth all-time in UCSB history. Kujore has qualified for Conference in the discus and the hammer.

Keep `em Coming
With her clearance of 5-7 (1.70m) in the high jump, Barbara Nwaba reached the all-time list in yet another event. She is now in a tie for seventh in the high jump and holds a position on the all-time list in four different events: the 100m hurdles, the 400m hurdles, the high jump and the heptathlon. Nwaba also came within four-hundredths of a second of qualifying for Conference in the 400m dash.

Go the Distance
At 25 laps and nearly 6.2 miles, the 10,000m is a tough race to prepare for. Last weekend, members of the distance squad participated in their first official 10,000m races of the season. Waleed Totari logged the first race on Friday at Stanford, and he reached ninth all-time for UCSB by running 29:54.16. Totari currently leads the Big West Conference in the men's 10k. The next day at Cal/Nevada, June Farley reached ninth all-time for the women by running 36:44.99, which was good for third place in the race. Farley is currently second in the Conference in the women's10k.

Sprinting Ahead
A few of the sprinters and hurdlers improved their seasonal marks to solidify their positions in the Conference. Jason Newland set a new personal best in the 200m at 21.79, which moves him up to sixth all-time at UCSB. Drew Johnston and Barbara Nwaba improved their hurdles times, with Johnston setting a 110 highs time of 15.23 and Nwaba setting a 100m hurdles time of 14.78. Nwaba moves up to fifth on the Gaucho hurdles list, and Johnston has now qualified for Conference in both the 400m hurdles and the 110 highs.
