Last Time Out
The men won the All-Cal Challenge Cup last weekend, finishing with 198.50 points to take the cup from UC Irvine. The team was led by Jason Newland's victories in the 100m (10.90) and 200m (21.93), Scott Smith's victories in the 1500m (3:53.41) and 3000m (8:33.22), and Erik Aardal's victory in the steeplechase (9:36.74). On the women's side, Katie Voigtlander had the Gauchos' best individual performance of the meet by running a personal best of 10:49.82 to win the steeplechase.
On the Horizon
UCSB will compete at the Ben Brown Invitational this Saturday, March 7. The meet will take place at Cal State Fullerton and will feature a main meet in the afternoon and a distance carnival in the evening. UCSB will have athletes competing in both events. Meet information can be found here. Next week, UCSB will host a multi-events meet on Friday March 13 through Saturday March 14. This will be the first opportunity for the decathletes and heptathletes to participate in an official competition.
Katie Voigtlander's 10:49.82 in the steeplechase at the All-Cal Challenge places her at number two all-time on the UCSB steeplechase list. The time was a 25-second personal best and meets the NCAA Regional qualifying standard of 10:50.25, although it's too early to qualify for Regionals at this point of the season. Voigtlander will be looking to continue to improve in the upcoming weeks and punch a ticket to Regionals.
One of reasons the men won the All-Cal Cup was that they scored big points in the sprinting events, led by Jason Newland's sweep of the 100m and 200m dashes. Newland set a new wind-legal personal best in the 100m by running 10.90. Max Bellissimo also contributed by winning the 400m with a time of 49.05. Bellissimo and Newland are both undefeated this season.
Speaking of Undefeated...
Scott Smith has competed in four races this season and has won all four. At the season opening Round-Up meet, Smith etched his name into the Gaucho record book by running 8:25.62 in the 3000m. He now sits at ninth all-time in the 3000m and fifth all-time in the 1500m. His best time in the 1500m this season is 3:53.41, which came in a victory at last weekend's All-Cal Challenge. Smith is slated to compete in the 5000m at Ben Brown.
