Oct. 28, 2005

IRVINE, Calif. - For the third time this season, the UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team pulled out a five-game victory, outlasting UC Irvine 25-30, 30-28, 20-30, 30-18, 15-10 Friday evening on Crawfod Court.

It was the Gauchos' ninth-straight victory and improved their overall record to 13-7 and 8-1 in Big West Conference play, one-and-a-half matches ahead of second-place Cal Poly. Meanwhile the Anteaters fell to 9-16, 2-6 in league action.

UC Irvine took a 14-10 lead in game on Vazquez's kill and then extended the margin to seven points (21-14) as Caprista and Kellerman put away the ball on consecutive plays. UCSB rallied back to close the gap to 23-21 on a pair of attack errors by Vazquez. However, two UCSB errors and a kill by Pavlik gave UCI the 28-23 lead and Kellerman put the ball away on game point for the 30-25 win.

In game two, UC Irvine took a 12-7 lead on an attack error by junior outside hitter Janine Sandell but watched the lead evaporate as UCSB logged a five-point run to take a one-point lead at 16-15 on a kill by Lauren McLaughlin. At 27-25, the Gauchos strung together four points (29-27), capped by a Jamie Garbisch service ace. Megan Blackshire put the game away on game point with a cross-court kill for the 30-28 win.

In game three, UCI cruised to an 11-point lead at 13-4. The Gauchos would get as close as seven points at 24-15 on a ball-handling error by UCI's Keegan Featherstone but a Kellerman kill and an attack error by McLaughlin gave the Anteaters a 26-16 lead. Consecutive attack errors by UCSB's Brett Quirarte and McLaughlin put the Anteaters at game point. White put the ball away down the line for the 30-20 win.

In game four UCSB poured on the attack with 13 consecutive points to build a quick 22-9 lead. Waldowski put away three balls and put up a pair of block assists in the run while Emily Hendrickson fired off two service aces. The Anteaters were unable to gain any momentum and Kellerman's attack error on game point gave UCSB the 30-18 win.

In game five, the Gauchos turned to Waldowski, whose kill gave the team a 6-3 lead. UCI capitalized on a pair of attack errors by Sandell and McLaughlin to rally and tie the game at 7-7. The Anteaters managed to stay in the game on Kellerman's kill at 10-10 but UCSB answered with a pair of kills from Sandell and McLaughlin. Quirarte and Waldowski teamed up twice to deny Kellerman at the net and Quirarte put the ball away on an overpass to take the match, 15-10.

The Gauchos were led by Sandell's 23-kill, 15-dig performance - her fifth-straight double-double - while Lauren McLaughlin added 13 kills. Blackshire added 12 kills and seven block assists while Olivia Waldowski led all players with a career-high 10 block assists. Setter Ashley Dutro had 51 assists in the win, and junior libero Emily Hendrickson equalled the second-highest dig total in school history with 34.

UCI freshman Lauren Kellerman led the team with a career-high 21 kills while junior Trisha White pounded out 14 kills and had five block assists. Senior Whitney Pavlik totaled eight blocks, including one solo block while Vazquez put away 12 kills. Setter Christa Conom had a double-double for the team with 47 assists and 10 digs and freshman defensive specialist Devon Sutherland also reached double-figures with 10 digs. Freshman Cassidy Caprista continued with her solid play, knocking down eight kills on 17 swings with no errors to hit .471 while putting up six block assists.

The Gauchos next take the court on Saturday evening at 23rd-ranked Long Beach State, a surprise loser to Cal Poly on Friday. The UCSB-LBSU showdown is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live at www.ucsbgauchos.com.
