Martin Advances to 800m Final, Anderson Takes Sixth in Shot Put on First Day of NCAA West Regional
May 29, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. -- The NCAA West Regional began Friday evening at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, and four Gauchos were in competition on the first day of the meet.
Scott Anderson took sixth place in the shot put, with his best throw reaching 58-3 (17.75m). The top five athletes automatically advanced to the NCAA Championships, and fifth place in the West was 59-4.25 (18.09m). Anderson, a senior, will now wait for the at-large selections to be announced.
Ryan Martin advanced to the finals of the 800m by placing second in Heat 3. The top two times in each heat, plus the next two fastest times overall, advanced to tomorrow's final. Martin's time of 1:50.23 edged him past a runner from BYU who finished at 1:50.37.
It was a disappointing day for junior Scott Smith, who decided to bypass the 1500m and take a fresh shot at the 5000m. He ended up placing 23rd with a time of 14:46.60.
Irene Kujore, competing at Regionals as a freshman, took 21st in the discus with a mark of 146-0 (44.51m). After fouling her first attempt, Kujore got on the board with her second throw but fouled again on her third, which left her below the advancement level for the finals.
Four Gauchos will compete tomorrow. Martin will race in the 800m finals, Katie Voigtlander will race in the steeplechase, Scott Finley will compete in the pole vault and Barbara Nwaba will compete in the high jump.
