May 14, 2011
CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Redshirt Junior Barbara Nwaba competed unattached at the Claremont Classic combined events on Saturday and won first place with a score of 5,714. This is a personal best score by 216 points and qualifies her for the US Track and Field Championships in June. Nwaba's nearest competitor was Lindsay Honea of Point Loma with 4,249.
Nwaba placed first in every single event including the shot put where she earned no marks in the Azusa combined events in April. In the 100 meter hurdles Nwaba ran 14.02, jumped 5'11.25" in the high jump, threw 40'00" in the shot put, ran a new personal best in the 200 meter dash in 24.54, jumped 17'11.50" in the long jump, threw 123'7" in the javelin and ran 2:19.52 in the 800 meter run.
While Nwaba ran for the UCSB track and field team for the 2010-2011 indoor season, Nwaba has chosen to compete unattached for the outdoor season in order to develop as a heptathlete and qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials.
