WALNUT, Calif. - Three Gauchos set school records during this weekend's competitions at Azusa Pacific and Mt. SAC. The track teams competed at Azusa's Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC's Mt. SAC Relays.
Scott Smith became the first Gaucho to break 14 minutes in the 5000m with his time of 13:56.72, in the fastest invitational university/open section at Mt. SAC. He bettered the previous record of 14:00.00 set by Dave Cullum in 1997. Smith's previous personal best was 14:03.28 from last season, and entering this week his time would place him in the top-10 of the west region.
Danielle Domenichelli broke the women's 5000m record, running in the invitational/open section of the 5000m at Mt. SAC. She finished with a time of 16:01.20, which broke the UCSB record of 16:12.77 set by Stephanie Rothstein in 2007. Domenichelli's previous personal best was 16:27.98 from two seasons ago, and entering this week her time would place her second in the west region.
The final record broken this weekend was by Irene Kujore in the discus. She competed at Azusa's Bryan Clay Invitational and had her best throw measure 171'6" (52.27m), which placed her second at the meet. She bettered the previous UCSB record of 170'11" set by Amy Haapanen in 2007.
Other highlights from Azusa included Michael Guerra posting a huge throw in the javelin of 219'7" (66.92m), bettering his previous best of 202'9" and winning the competition by more than 30 feet. Guerra is now third on the UCSB all-time javelin list. Additionally, Alex Umstead won the men's hammer at 189'4" (57.72m), Tamara Thomas won the triple jump at 39'5.75" (12.03m) and placed second in the long jump at 17'10.25" (5.44m), and Helena Montin took second in the high jump with a personal best clearance over 5'7" (1.70m).
Other highlights from Mt. SAC included Julian DeRubira moving into third place on the Gaucho all-time 5000m list with a performance of 14:03.38. His previous best competing for the Gauchos was 14:16.96, set at this season's Stanford Invitational.
Next weekend the Gauchos will be in San Diego for the UCSD Triton Invitational.
