AZUSA, Calif. -- Barbara Nwaba improved upon her UCSB heptathlon record and Mike Powers set a personal best of more than 700 points in the decathlon at the California Invitational multi-events, held at Azusa Pacific University.
Nwaba improved upon her UCSB record of 5039 with a score of 5212, which placed seventh in section one. Her top scoring events were 891 in the high jump with a clearance over 5'8" (1.73m), 883 in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.69, and 855 in the 200m dash with a time of 25.35.
Powers set a new personal best in the decathlon with a score of 6690, winning section three. Last season his best mark was 5927. His highlights from this meet included an 810 performance of 50.10 in the 400m, and an 802 performance of 15.40 in the 110m high hurdles.
Christina Nowak also performed well in the heptathlon, placing fourth in section two with a personal best score of 4720. That score moves her up to fourth on the Gaucho all-time list. She previously sat 10th with a score of 4278, which she set last season. Her highlights from this meet were an 818 in the high jump with a clearance over 5'5.75" (1.67m), a 777 performance in the 100m hurdles of 15.50, and a 718 performance in the 200m dash of 26.93.
The Gauchos will compete tomorrow at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, and over the next two days at the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut, Calif.
