Martin and Kujore Set Regional Marks at the Big West Challenge Cup

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Two more Gauchos earned qualification to the NCAA West Regionals on Friday evening. UCSB competed in the Big West Challenge Cup at Cal State Fullerton and saw great marks from the distance runners and throwers.

Ryan Martin set a personal best in the 800m by more than two seconds, coming across the line in 1:49.79 for the win. Martin's time is the fifth-fastest in UCSB history and earns him a trip to Regionals. He was at the front for most of the race and attacked the final 200 meters to clock a great time.

Irene Kujore was the second Gaucho to qualify for Regionals, as she threw 158-11 (48.43m) in the discus to take second place. Kujore, a freshman, now holds the fourth-best discus mark in UCSB history. She also took second in the hammer with a personal best of 165-2 (50.35m).

Scott Smith earned a Regional mark in his second event of the season, winning the 1500m in 3:47.66. He edged Matt Maldonado from Long Beach State by a tenth of a second. Smith doubled-up by winning the 3000m later in the meet, finishing with a time of 8:27.60.

Jason Newland was the winner of the 100m dash in 10.69, which was wind-legal and moves him into second place on the UCSB all-time list. Newland also set a personal best in the 200m dash, running 21.64 to take second place. Newland moves into fifth on the all-time 200m list.

In the javelin, Christina Nowak took third with a throw of 115-6 (35.21m), which qualifies for Conference. Michael Guerra threw his seasonal best in the men's javelin, hitting 191-11 (58.51m).

Also out in the field, Tayler Williams was the winner of the long jump with a mark of 18-5 (5.61m). Williams achieved that mark on her final attempt.

Athletes who qualified for Conference were Chichi Amadi in the hammer (148-4, 45.22m), Ryan Haswell in the 110m hurdles (15.22), Sarah Vitug in the 1500m (4:42.84) and Kyle Louv in the steeplechase (9:38.40).

The winner of the men's Challenge Cup was Long Beach State with 209 points. The Gauchos were second with 178 points, UC Irvine was third with 167 and Cal State Fullerton fourth with 121.

UC Irvine won the women's Challenge Cup with 194.50 points. Cal State Fullerton was second with 167.50, Long Beach State third with 157 and the Gauchos fourth with 152.

Next week the Gauchos will compete at the Azusa Pacific Invitational on Friday, March 17. Some members of the team will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday and Saturday, March 17-18.
