Hired in January 2005 as a Gaucho Assistant Coach, David comes off of 5 years of racing for UCSB as well as founding the Gaucho Track & Field Athlete Association and helping direct last years 2nd Annual Crab Feed Fundraiser. He will primarily help the distances as well as work with media relations.
2004 Track & Field: Entering his senior year David opened up with a win in the All-Cal Cup 5000m out kicking a strong UC Davis runner. His time of 14:36.68 was a career best. He ended his career at the Big West Championships in what was his best racing as a Gaucho with a huge double, finishing 5th in the 10,000m behind two teammates and then coming back the next day to take All-Conference honors in the 5000m by finishing 3rd.
2003 XC Recap:Dave was named Team Co-Captain for the 2003 season ...opened the season with a UCSB Lagoon 8k best 25:01...ran 24:53.1 at Riverside Inv...finished 24th at Big West and 74th at West Regional Championship as the team's third man.
2003 Track Recap: Red-shirted his 4th year, but logged lifetime bests in the 1,500m (3:54.14) and 5,000m (14:38.60)
2001 Track Recap: Scored at the Conference Championships by placing 6th in the 10,000m race. Also was the winner of the Big West Challenge Cup 3,000m run by clocking a lifetime best of 8:38.52.
1999-2000 Recap: Finished 19th at 1999 Big West XC Championships, the team's 3rd man as a true 17-year old freshman, running a XC 8k PR of 26:09...Recorded Head Coach Pete Dolan's fastest freshman 5,000m time of 14:55.91 at 2000 Stanford Invitational...Walked on to the team as a freshman in 1999.
High School:In his senior year at Piedmont Hills High School, Monico ran a 9:32 at C.C.S. Top 8 but was then plagued by illness ending his season early. In cross country he qualified for the state meet as an individual out of C.C.S. and finished 18th in the D2 race with a time of 16:14.
Parents Jose and Clara Monico were born and raised in Leiria, Portugal...Older sister Vera Monico was also born in Portugal. Dave's father, Jose, passed away in 1994 and remains as his inspiration to live life passionately.
