Women's Track set to Open Indoor Campaign in Idaho
The UC Santa Barbara Women's Track and Field team will open their indoor season this weekend in chilly Moscow. Rather than joining the thousands of spectators from around the world heading to Russia, the Gauchos will head north to Idaho to compete at the University of Idaho's indoor Kibbie Dome. The Kibbie Dome seats 18,000 and has a 290m unbanked Mondo track.
They will contest two meets starting with the Vandal Indoor on Friday. Then on Saturday they will compete in the Runner's Soul Open.
Associate Head Coach Cody Fleming looks for a solid opener. "This is going to be an opportunity to knock some rust off and compete against some good teams. Last year I had a conversation with Wayne Phipps (the Director of Idaho's Track and Cross Country Programs) and he invited us to come up to the University of Idaho and compete in a smaller, competitive meet. They have assembled good fields and we look forward to bringing our group up to the Kibbie Dome."
The Gaucho women are coming off four straight runner-up finishes at the Big West Championships. They will travel a group of athletes entered to compete in events ranging from the 3,000m to the 20lb. indoor weight throw. Jennifer Carey will be making an appearance in the 400m, competing in the event on both Friday and Saturday. Carey qualified for the 2013 IAAF World Championships with her Big West winning run of 52.29.
