IRVINE, Calif. – Senior thrower Irene Kujore finished among the top-six in three events and several distance runners had outstanding finishes to pace the UC Santa Barbara women's track and field team at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Kujore took second-place in the shot put with a toss of 49'9.75", a mark that left her less than five inches from claiming the victory. In addition, Kujore finished fifth in the hammer at 165'10" and sixth in the discus at 147'02". Kathleen Guzman gave the Gauchos another top-10 finisher in the discus placing ninth at 138'05". Veronica Gines was eighth in the hammer at 165'07" and Lara Lewis was 10th in the shot put with a mark of 39'9.25".
Grace Esslinger recorded a javelin throw of 131'02", good for fifth-place.
UCSB had four of the top-10 finishers in the 5,000 meters. Leading the way in the event was Christine Cooperstein who ran a 16:54.00 to finish fifth, one spot ahead of teammate Danielle Moreno who was sixth in a clocking of 17:10.34. Sarah Schreck (17:33.87) and Jessica Chadwick (17:37.94) were ninth and 10th respectively. Chadwick also took 11th-place in the 1,500 meters at 4:43.17.
A pair of Gauchos also had top-five finishes in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Ariana Selix ran 11:06.58 to finish third and Maxine Goyette was fifth at 11:11.49. Selix also finished second in her heat and eighth overall in the 800 meters in a time of 2:12.97.
