SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara track & field teams kicked-off the season with the Gaucho Round-Up on Saturday Feb. 16th and the men's and women's teams each came home with a victory.
The women finished with 180.5 points, with Westmont in second with 124.5 and Pepperdine in third with 36 points. On the men's side, the Gauchos dominated with 187 points, with Westmont second at 132 and Pepperdine finishing with 14 points.
The Gaucho women won all but three events, and in some events they went 1-2-3.
UCSB's first win was in the 400m dash where Jennifer Carey came in first with a time of 55.93 and Camille Petty came in second with a 59.71. The Gauchos had a strong showing in the distance events where the women took first through fourth in the one-mile run. They came right back in the 3000m and took first through third. Danielle Moreno was the winner in both running 4:59.84 and 9:58.38, respectively.
The Santa Barbara women dominated both relays. Grace Esslinger, Amanda Rodriguez, Brittany Fulton and Jennifer Carey took first in the 4x100m relay and Amanda Rodriguez, Camille Petty, Jennifer Carey and Alyssa Schlom won the 4x400m relay
The Gauchos took first in all of the field events, including a sweep in the shot put. Freshman Lara Lewis won the discus with a toss of 42.18m followed by Kathleen Guzman (44.120m), Ashley Alama (40.30m) and Heather Hawes (40.27m). The Gauchos came right back and took first through fourth in the hammer throw.
On the men's side, UCSB won all but five events. The men started off strong taking the top three places in the 100m dash with Evan Walker taking first (10.89), followed by Dustan Holtz (11.30) and Nate Harvey (11.51). The Gauchos had a strong showing in the mile run. Shyan Vaziri clocked a 4:09.40 and was followed by five other Santa Barbara runners.
On the field, Senior Derek Masterson had a solid season-opening showing, taking first in the high jump (2.00m) and third in the discuss throw (38.15). Albert Hughes took home a double win in the discus throw (43.76m) and hammer throw (49.64m). Freshman Stephen Leach had a strong appearance in his first collegiate meet taking third in shot put (12.37m) and second in hammer throw (37.18).
Overall, it was a very successful first outdoor meet of the season. The Gauchos return to the track on March 2 to compete at the UC Irvine Invitational.
