To say 2013 was a breakout year for Jennifer Carey would be an understatement. She leaves UCSB as the most accomplished female sprinter in school history and holds the 200m, 400m, 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m school records. She was the 2013 Big West Champion in the 400m and took runner up in the women’s 200m after running an electric 23.69.
Newly crowned Irish National Champion and former UC Santa Barbara star Jennifer Carey will be extending her season by a few weeks to represent Ireland in the IAAF World Championships in the 400 meters.

Derek Masterson of UC Santa Barbara won the decathlon and two of his teammates finished among the top-six at the Big West Conference Multi-Event competition and the first leg of the 2013 Big West Track and Field Championships at Cal State Northridge on Saturday. Tori Usgaard finished fourth in her first Big West Championship meet.
There will be a handful of the UC Santa Barbara men and women heading to the 55th annual track and field Mt. SAC Invitational as well as the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational. Many of them are looking to compete among some of the best athletes in the Nation.
The UC Santa Barbara women's track and field team claimed the 21st Big West Challenge Cup on Friday, defeating second-place Long Beach State, 187.5 to 170.0. The Gaucho men finished second to the 49ers, 213.5 to 183.0.
UC Santa Barbaraâs Mike Powers recorded a score of 6,806 in the decathlon to finish third at the Sam Adams Multi-Events Meet held on Friday and Saturday at Westmont College. Powers was the highest collegiate finisher at the meet.
Mitchell Haag won the high jump with a leap of 7’02.50” and was named the Field Athlete of the Meet, helping the UC Santa Barbara men’s team to a third-place finish at the Cal/Nevada Championships at UC San Diego on Saturday. The Gaucho women’s team finished fourth.
Senior thrower Irene Kujore finished among the top-six in three events and several distance runners had outstanding finishes to pace the UC Santa Barbara women’s track and field team at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic on Friday and Saturday.
The UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s track & field teams swept past UC Riverside in a pair of dual meets on Saturday afternoon in the Inland Empire. The Gaucho men rolled to a 112-62 victory while the women’s squad posted a 95-84 victory.
The UCSB men’s and women’s track and field teams both took 1st place last weekend, defeating UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC San Diego at the UC Invitational in Irvine. The women finished with a final score of 220, and the men finished with a score of 228.
The Gauchos traveled north to one of the top indoor meets of the year, The UW Invitational. The meet was held January 25-26 at the University of Washington at the Dempsey Indoor Stadium. Hundreds of collegiate athletes from around the United States attended, including our own, Irene Kujore.
The annual Gaucho Track & Field Round-Up to help support the UC Santa Barbara men's and women's track & field programs is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16 following the program's meet against Westmont College and Pepperdine which is scheduled to take place on the Westmont track in Montecito.
Josh Priester, who has served as the Associate Director of Track and Field at UC Santa Barbara since August of 2008 has resigned to pursue the development of a non-profit organization, the Women’s Athletic Performance Foundation, in Santa Barbara.
