    While recent UC Santa Barbara graduates Ryan Martin and Barbara Nwaba were posting impressive performances at their first U.S. Olympic Trials, they were joined in Eugene by several fellow Gaucho alums.

    UCSB's Barbara Nwaba finished fifth on Saturday in the heptathlon at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon. The collegiate All-American finished with a total of 5,986 points.
  • Nwaba in Fourth After Day One of U.S. Olympic Trials

    Recent UC Santa Barbara graduate Barbara Nwaba had a strong opening day on Friday in the women’s heptathlon at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. The collegiate All-American currently sits in fourth place with 3,736 points, which is just 26 points out of third place and 212 out of first.

    Irvine, Calif. - Led by Barbara Nwaba, four Big West track and field athletes were named to the annual USTFCCCA All-America First Team following their success at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, last week. Three additional student-athletes received All-America Second Team honors and five field participants were placed on the All-American Honorable Mention list.

    DES MOINES, Iowa-- Barbara Nwaba currently holds on to second place after day one of the heptathlon event at the NCAA Division 1 Championships at Drake Stadium. Nwaba capped off day one with a total of 3,596 points while Oregon's Brianne Theisen holds the lead with 3,803 points.

    WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches of America (USTFCCCA) announced its men’s and women’s Athletes and Coaches of the Year on Monday, naming Pete Dolan, UCSB's Track and Field Head Coach as the West Region Coach of the Year.
  • Ryan Martin Punches His Ticket to NCAA Championships

    Ryan Martin blazed through the 800m semi-finals on Saturday to qualify for the NCAA Divsion 1 Championships June 6-9 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Martin had the second fastest time, crossing the finish with a time of 1:47.49. Ricky West of the University of Missouri had the fastest semi-finals time at 1:46.65.
  • Justine Diaz Qualifies for the 800m Semis After Day 1 of NCAA Preliminaries

    Senior Justine Diaz has qualified to compete in NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa June 6-9 after her performance in the 800m in the preliminary round on Thursday. Diaz ran a 2:07.26 to finish top three in the first heat which earned her an automatic qualification.

  • Big West Honors Barbara Nwaba As Field Athlete of the Year

    The ballots from the Big West Conference Office came in on Wednesday, declaring Barbara Nwaba as the 2012 Big West Female Field Athlete of the Year and Head Coach Pete Dolan as the Big West Women's Co-Coach of the year. Dolan shares the honors with UC Davis' head coach Drew Wartenburg who lead his women's team to their first Big West title.

    The UCSB track and field team picked up several post Big West Conferece awards on Wednesday with UCSB Head Coach Pete Dolan being named Big West Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side. In addition, Barbara Nwaba was named Big West Field Athlete of the Year while Shyan Vaziri was awarded co-Big West Freshman Male Athlete of the Year.

    The UCSB women's track and field team put up a hard-faught weekend of competition and came extremely close to winning their first Conference team title in several decades. Unfortunately, the women were separate by 0.5 points from this year's 2012 Big West Champions, UC Davis who scored a combined team total of 170 points.

    The UCSB women track and field team got off to a great start after day one of the Big West Conference Championship held at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium. Several women claimed Big West Conference titles and knocked down personal as well as school records. The women currently have the lead with a total of 73 points after seven events and ahead of Long Beach State University who has 51 points.

    The UCSB Gauchos will head down to UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium this weekend for the remainder of the Big West Conference Championships, May 11-12. Last year Long Beach State University won the men's division while the California State University-Northridge won the women's division. The Gauchos are looking in pretty good shape and hungrier than ever to reclaim their title.

    Senior Barbara Nwaba has a strong lead in the heptathlon after day one of competition at the Big West Multi-event Championship held at UC Irvine. Nwaba's score after four events is 3,648 and 400 points more than her closest competitor, Phylicia Johnson of Long Beach State University.

  • Gaucho Women Defeat Cal Poly, Nwaba Secures Three Individual Victories

    Notable performances today were highlighted by Barbara Nwaba who competed in the 100m hurdles, high jump and javelin events, and winning all three in clear fashion. In the throws, Irene Kujore had a great performance winning both the shot put and discus events while Alex Umstead lead the men's hammer throw and shot put events. Mitchell Haag captured another victory in the high jump while the vertical jumps were lead by John Walsh in the long jump and Arthur Dyson in the triple jump. In the running events, Ryan Martin highlighted the 400m for a new lifetime best time while Shyan Vaziri lead the men's 1,500m and breaking another PR.

    The majority of the UCSB track and field team competed on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invite in Azsua, Calif. with two victories, one on the women's and one on the men's side. On Friday, two Gaucho middle distance runners competed at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
  • Anthony Masci Sets New PR in 3k Steeple, Finishes Top 10 at Mt. SAC

    Anthony Masci highlighted the men's distance race in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 54th annual Mt. SAC Relays held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Thursday. Masci clocked in 9:04.52 for a new personal best time, placing eighth out of 24 runners.

  • Nwaba Picks Up Second-Consecutive Big West Athlete of the Week Award

    The Big West Conference voted Senior Barbara Nwaba Big West Female Field Athlete of the week earlier today for her performances this past weekend at the Big West Challenge Cup. For the second-consecutive week, Nwaba has earned Big West honors in the javelin and the 100-meter hurdles. The Los Angeles native who specializes in multi-events like the indoor pentathlon and the outdoor heptathlon won botht he high jump (5-9.75) and the javelin (131-9). She also placed second in the 100m hurdles, clocking in a time of 13.82.
  • Women Come Out Firing To Defend Big West Challenge Title

    Despite having the meet rescheduled due to weather conditions, Gaucho women got off to a great start and defended their Big West Challenge title at the Titan track on Sunday while the Gaucho men finished second to Long Beach State. Among the other schools at the meet were UC Irvine and host CSU Fullerton.
  • Rain, Rain, Go Away: Big West Challenge Postponed Till Sunday

    Due to less than ideal weather conditions, the 20th annual Big West Challenge which was slated to start on Friday has been postponed until Sunday, Apr. 15. There were be a new revised schedule with start times all three hours earlier. The field events will kick off with the hammer throw at 11:30am on Sunday. The first track event will be the 3000 meter steeplechase which will begin on 2 p.m. on Sunday
  • Barbara Nwaba Breaks Big West Heptathlon Record, Ranked Number 1 in Nation

    Barbara Nwaba continued to light up the track at the Sam Adams Invitational last week with her new Big West Conference record breaking score of 5986 in the heptathlon. Nwaba won Big West Conference Athlete of the Week awards for her performance and is currently nationally recongized as number one in the entire nation. The Los Angeles native has qualified for an automatic spot in the NCAA Championships later this season.
