IRVINE, Calif.--The ballots from the Big West Conference Office came in on Wednesday, declaring Barbara Nwaba as the 2012 Big West Female Field Athlete of the Year and Head Coach Pete Dolan as the Big West Women's Co-Coach of the year. Dolan shares the honors with UC Davis' head coach Drew Wartenburg who lead his women's team to their first Big West title.
The official press release from the Big West Conference as follows:
Nwaba is just the second Gaucho to win the Women's Field Athlete of the Year award for Santa Barbara. Nwaba set records all season collecting four Big West Athlete of the Week honors. In the multi-event portion of the conference meet, the senior led the competition for her second heptathlon title with a record-breaking score of 5,709 points, eclipsing the previous mark of 5,642 set by Cal Poly's Sharon Day in 2008. Nwaba continued on during the main meet with two more first place finishes. She ran a school record 13.62 in the 100 meter hurdles to beat her previous lifetime best by more than half a second. Nwaba also captured the title in the high jump with a best mark of 5-9.75. Her three titles helped the Gauchos contend for the team championship, as they fell just a half point short of champion UC Davis.
Barbara Nwaba will now begin preparing for the first round of NCAA Preliminaries to be held in Austin, TX May 24-26.
