IRVINE, Calif.-- Senior Barbara Nwaba has a strong lead in the heptathlon after day one of competition at the Big West Multi-event Championship held at UC Irvine's Anteater track. Nwaba's score after four events is 3,648 and 400 points more than her closest competitor, Phylicia Johnson of Long Beach State University.
Competing in 70-degree weather and sunny conditions, Nwaba lead the 100m hurdles with a solid time of 13.82, a new personal best. Nwaba then tied her personal best in the high jump at 6-0 before a close attempt at a height of 6-1. While Nwaba had the farthest shot put mark of the day at 41-5.25, she was about three feet off from her personal best throw of 44-7.5. The last event of day one was the 200m dash where Nwaba blazed past the finish line with the fastest time of the day (24.59).
Tomorrow's competition will resume tomorrow morning at 1pm PT at the UC Irvine track with the remainder of the hepathalon (long jump, javelin, 800m) while the remainder of the men's decathlon will begin at 11am.
