EUGENE, Ore. - Despite a disappointing finish at the USA Track and Field Championships this past weekend, Ryan Martin has a lot to be proud of. Martin placed 19th in the preliminary round on Thursday and failed to move on to finals by less than one hundredth of a second. Martin finished fourth in heat four with a time of 1:48.81 The winner of the men's 800m event was Nicholas Symmonds of Oregon TC Elite who ran 1:44.17.
Martin finishes up his 2011 outdoor season with his second straight All-American award which he earned at the NCAA Preliminaries in May. Other highlights this season include Martin's performance at the Conference Championships where he defeated UC Irvine's Charles Jock which no doubt one of the most memorable performances at a Big West Championship let alone Martin's track career. Ryan also broke his own school record in the 800m which he set last season. Entering into his final season in the Fall, Ryan Martin has only shown a taste of what he is capable of.
Josh Scherer who represented UCSB at the USA Junior National Championships placed 19th in the finals of the Junior men's hammer throw competition where his farthest throw measured 166'0". The winner of the event was Alec Faldermeyer of UCLA who threw 241'2". Scherer
UCSB's Barbara Nwaba finished eighth overall in the women's heptathlon where she competed unattached and improved her score for a new personal best of 5,733. Sharon Day of Asics won the event with a total score of 6,058. Nwaba will return as a full-roster athlete in the fall where she will have her sights set on qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Trials.
