Gauchos Wrap Up Successful Season, Martin Heads to NCAA Championships

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The UCSB Track and Field team wrapped up a successful season at their team banquet on Saturday. Some team highlights included both the women and men's team winning their dual meet against Cal Poly as well as the women finishing second and men placing fourth in the Big West Conference Championships.

The banquet featured a sit down meal catered by a local restaurant along with presentation of individual athlete awards. The team also presented gifts to several seniors: Amanda MorenoJean Lightfoot, Alvin Go, Julian deRuibra, Maureen AjokuSnita AshfordMaria Lisa CrimiCrystal Reed, and Sheneice Vargas.

The Gaucho award which was awarded to individuals who embodied the 'Gaucho Spirit' were given to Andrea Jacobs (steeplechase), Jean Lightfoot (discus, shot put, hammer), Mitchell Haag (high jump), Max Villalba (high jump), Mike Larocca (high jump) and Snita Ashford (100m, 4x100m relay). 

The Most Improved award recipients were Anthony Masci (steeplechase), Jessica Johnson (400m, 4x400m relay), Sean Johnson (110m hurdles) and Josh Scherer (discus, shot put).

The Field MVP was awarded to Maureen Ajoku (long jump, high jump) and Derek Masterson(decathlon) while Amanda Moreno (3k, 5k) and Ryan Martin (800m) earned the Track MVP award.

Ryan Martin will represent UCSB as he heads to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa hosted by Drake Stadium, June 8-11.
