UC Santa Barbara's Michelle Murphy and Jill Damion captured Second Team Big West honors as the 2009 women's tennis all-conference team was unveiled Tuesday. Murphy, a junior transfer from Michigan State, logged a 10-10 dual match record playing primarily at the tough No. 1 position. In doubles, Murphy teamed with Sofia Novak to grab Second team honors as well. The duo tabbed a perfect 6-0 record at the No. 1 slot and tallied an impressive 13-1 regular season record.
Sophomore Jill Damion joined Murphy on the Second Team all-conference list, ending the season with a 10-10 overall record. The sophomore standout played almost exclusively at the No. 2 slot for the Gauchos and defeated fellow Second Team nominee Courtney Byron of UC Irvine in the Big West Semifinals. In doubles, Damion teamed with freshman Natalia Lozano to notch a 10-4 overall record playing between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The duo grabbed second team honors with their exceptional play this year.
Freshman Sofia Novak rounded out the rest of the Gauchos nominated for Big West honors, garnering in honorable mention for her work at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots of the lineup. Novak completed the season 16-4, recording the most wins on the team for the Gauchos.
