UC Santa Barbara vs. UC Riverside
at the UC Riverside Tennis Complex
Last but Not Least
The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team (12-5 overall) will wrap up its Big West schedule this year, traveling to UC Riverside to take on the Highlanders at high noon. The Gauchos stand in fifth place in the conference, moving to 4-4 after its last win against Cal State Fullerton. The UCSB women also boast wins over UC Davis, San Jose State and Cal State Northridge. On the road, the Gauchos have little experience, only playing four matches away from home, tallying a 2-2 record. UC Riverside (0-5 in Big West) will be looking for their first Big West win when UCSB comes to town. The match will take place at UC Riverside's Student Recreation Center Tennis Complex.
Sofia Novak has been almost unstoppable this year. After starting the year a perfect 3-0 at the No. 4 slot in singles, coach Pete Kirkwood has moved the freshman standout up one position. After the switch, Novak has held strong, capturing 10 wins in 13 attempts. She now stands at a team best 13-3 with Bryanna Ojeda, Natalia Lozano and Asagi Onaga all not too far behind. Playing almost exclusively at the No. 6 position, Ojeda has tallied an 11-3 overall record, which currently gives her the team's second best record. Lozano and Onaga have also been lighting up the score books, grabbing double digits in the win column (both are 11-5).
In doubles play, Novak has teamed with Michelle Murphy to manufacture a 9-1 overall record. Since switching to the No. 1 slot, the duo is 2-0 with wins over Santa Clara and Harvard. Another pair of Gauchos making some noise is Ojeda and Onaga, capturing an 8-1 overall record. The duo finally snapped their 6-0 winning streak last week, losing to Harvard's No. 3.
