Women's Tennis Prepares for Spring Dual Matches

Jan. 17, 2011

Santa Barbara Calif - After a successful fall tournament season, UCSB women's tennis resumed practice January 3 and begins its spring dual match schedule Friday, January 28 against Santa Clara at home.

The Gauchos will face nine nationally ranked teams this year, the highlight being a home match against #9 Northwestern on March 24. Other ranked opponents include #27 SMU, #41 St. Mary's, #42 Long Beach State, #43 Dartmouth, #44 Pepperdine, #63 UC Irvine, #64 Cal Poly and #73 Wyoming.

The return of Junior Sofia Novak from a quarter studying abroad and the early enrollment of Freshman Paola Cos give the Gauchos a much-needed boost as they look to tackle a tough schedule and earn a spot in the NCAA Championships.

"I am going to go out on a limb and tell you that this team is going to be really good," said head coach Peter Kirkwood. "We expect to beat a few of those ranked teams on our schedule and we fully expect to finish in the national rankings ourselves."
