SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team has been ranked 73rd in the nation in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll of the 2007 spring season and its No. 1 doubles team of Charlotte Scatliffe and Marta Simic has been ranked No. 38 in the nation, it was announced Tuesday.
"Being ranked 73 is a great place to start since we only return one starter," said Gaucho head coach Pete Kirkwood. "I do however think this team has the talent to reach a much higher ranking."
The Gauchos are one of three Big West teams ranked among the nation's top-75. Long Beach State checked in at No. 27 and UC Irvine is ranked 55th.
Scatliffe, one of just two returning regulars for UCSB, will team with Simic, a transfer from Broward Community College in Florida to form a potent doubles team. The duo is also ranked 15th in the West Region by the ITA.
"Marta and Charlotte had a great fall. Taking down the #4 seeds at the West Regional was huge," said Kirkwood. "I am glad they have been rewarded for their efforts. They have a real shot at going to Nationals."
The Gauchos will open the 2007 season on Saturday, Feb. 3, when they host Santa Clara in a 11:00 a.m. match at the school's Robertson Gymnasium Courts.
