INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team saw its 2006 season come to an end Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Center as fifth-seeded Cal State Northridge rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the fourth-seeded Gauchos 4-3 in quarterfinal action at the Big West Conference Championships.
The Matadors advanced to Saturday's semifinals, where they will square off against No. 1 seed Long Beach State at 9:00 a.m. CSUN improved to 16-6 on the season, while UCSB - ranked 70th nationally - fell to 13-9.
UCSB clinched the doubles point with a pair of 8-4 victories at No. 1 and No. 2. The Matadors won at the No. 3 spot but found themselves facing the 1-0 deficit.
Things looked bleak for CSUN when No. 1 singles player Silvia Gutierrez retired due to injury in her match against Marielle Gruenig after losing the first three games. Charlotte Scatliffe then gave the Gauchos a 3-0 lead when she rolled past Ana Matijasevic by a 6-1, 6-2 score.
That's when the comeback started.
CSUN's No. 5 player YuYu Myinttun secured the first point for the Matadors with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Leslie Damion. Olga Yepremian was down a set and trailing 3-0 in the second, but won 12 of the last 13 games to record a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over UCSB's Brittany Kausen. Koichumanova overcame a similar tough spot against her No. 2 singles opponent Chelsea Glynn. Trailing 3-0 in the second set after losing the first, Koichumanova battled back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
It all came down to the No. 3 spot between CSUN's Canna Furuta and Gaucho senior Andrea Pintar. In a match of long rallies, Furuta won the first set 6-3 and won 7-6 in a second set tiebreaker to give the Matadors the hard-fought upset victory.
