No. 28 Long Beach State Sweeps the Singles, Defeats No. 60 UCSB, 6-1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After dropping the doubles point the 20th-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team rallied to sweep all six singles matches against No. 60 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara. The victory secures the top-seed for the 49ers at the 2006 Big West Tennis Championships.
UCSB (13-8 overall, 6-2 in the Big West) jumped out to a 1-0 by winning two out of the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Andrea Pintar and Charlotte Scatliffe defeated Katy Williams and Sandra Rocha, 8-4. The 49ers (17-4 overall, 6-0 in the Big West) posteda win at No. 2 doubles with Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks edging Marielle Gruenig and Chelsea Glynn, 8-6. UCSB's Leslie Damion and Mio Fukushima recorded an 8-4 win over Steph Bengson and Rachael Porsz at No. 3.
Not only did Long Beach sweep all six singles matches,s they did so in commanding fashion, needing just two sets for five of the six. The lone three-set match was at No. 3 where Pintar extended Bengson to three before losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
While the 49ers, which have won each of the last two Big West Tournament titles, are set as the No. 1 seed, the status of the Gauchos is still up in the air. The league's coaches will decided the seeds next week.
Saturday's contest marked the final home appearance for six UCSB seniors. Gruenig, Glynn, Pintar, Damion, Fukushima and Amy Vyhnis are all Gaucho seniors.
UCSB will return to action on Thursday, April 27, when it opens play in the Big West Tournament at Indian Wells, Calif.
