Santa Barbara, Calif. - After winning the first doubles match, the UCSB women's team lost to Fresno Pacific 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Robertson Gymnasium Courts. The Gauchos could not repeat Sunday's 7-0 sweep over UC Riverside and with the loss brings the Gauchos to a season record of 4-5.
The Sunbird's record improved to 12-0 and they hold onto their #2 NAIA ranking.
Marta Simic and Charlotte Scatliffe got the Gauchos off to a good start when they won the first match of the day 8-3 over Fresno Pacific's Jelena Pandzic and Audrey Laib. This was the only win of the day as the No.2 doubles pairing of Carina Bjornstrom and Asagi Onaga lost a close one to Angie Minova and Anna Karavayeva 9-7. Bryana Ojeda and Noelle Hiniese lost the last doubles match of the day 8-6 against Amandine Ferot and Megan Hanner.
Freshman Hirniese was the only Gaucho to win in singles beating her opponent Hanner 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6. Junior Marta Simic lost at the No. 1 spot as Pandzic dealt the 6-1, 6-2 blow. Finnish freshman Bjornstrom was kept out of the winner's circle when Minova won at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3. Onaga, another freshman, could not come up victorious against Karavayeva playing as No.3, losing 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. Ojega, and Wilson both took losses on the day at the No. 4 and 5 positions to Laib and Ferot, respectively.
UCSB next plays Cal Poly at the Rob Gym Courts in a Big West Conference match-up. The Mustangs are currently is 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the Big West. The two teams meet Friday, March 16 at 1:30.
